BioPlus Specialty Pharmacy Works to Raise Awareness to Hepatitis C
Posters aim to remind people to get tested.
Altamonte Springs, FL. Feb 15th 2010 BioPlus Specialty Pharmacy today announced the
launch of their campaign to raise awareness of Hepatitis C (HCV). “There just isn’t enough
attention drawn to Hepatitis,” said Enoch Strollo, VP of BioPlus. “Without media exposure,
thousands to millions of people are walking around infected with HCV without obvious
symptoms, and with no knowledge of having the disease. Media exposure will change this.
There are several medicines currently available and several more in clinical development that show great promise in treating HCV, so now is the best time to remind people to get tested.”
Most recently Three Rivers Pharmaceuticals received approval for RibaPak®, a higher dose per pill form of ribavirin. This formulation makes adherence easier by allowing patients to take only two pills per day instead of up to six. “The pharmaceutical world is eagerly anticipating the approval of protease inhibitors to be added to current HCV therapies that will increase the chance of a successful outcome ‐ viral remission” Enoch continued. The protease inhibitors that are on the radar are Telaprevir from Vertex Pharamceuticals (NYSE: VRTX) and Boceprevir from Merck, formerly Schering Plough (NYSE: MRK)
“There has never been enough awareness regarding HCV,” said Dr. Stephen Vogt, PharmD and CEO of BioPlus. “In the 20 years we have been working with chronic diseases, the therapies for HCV are the most challenging to manage. Confidence in the treatments, understanding how the disease spreads and information on how to protect oneself is limited. With this lack of education and awareness comes a complacent attitude towards getting tested. In addition, even when diagnosed, there is no sense of urgency in getting treatment.”
The posters are being provided at no charge through the company web site:
www.bioplusrx.com. They are also being proactively sent out to hospitals and doctor offices
across the country.
